Press Release ~~~ On the night of Thursday, August 21st, 2014 at approximately 11:23PM Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputies Byron Fairchild and David Pridemore were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint on KY Rte. 321 at the mouth of Southside Lane in Paintsville. While conducting the checkpoint, a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Shelby Barnett (aka Burchett), age 23 of Lowmansville came through. When the vehicle came to a stop, Mrs. Barnett was asked for her driver’s license. While shining a flashlight into the vehicle, deputies observed an active Meth lab, lying in the floorboard of the back seat. Deputies stated the Meth Lab was bubbling and very active. Deputies also observed a strong chemical odor coming from the vehicle. Due to the presence of a potentially dangerous substance, the roadway had to be blocked. The Equinox remained on KY321 until the Meth Lab was disassembled by the Kentucky State Police DESI Unit. Meanwhile, all other traffic was routed safely around the scene. Barnett and her passenger James Baldwin, age 33 of Paintsville were taken into custody and charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine 1st. Baldwin, who was caught in weeks prior by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office with Methamphetamine, was out of jail on bond at the time, so he was additionally charged with Violation of Conditions of Release. Both subjects were arrested and lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. This case is currently under investigation by Deputy Byron Fairchild.
