Press Release Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) came to learn that on the evening of April 16, 2014, Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested journalist Stanley Gatera on suspicion of soliciting and extorting a bribe from a citizen by threatening to write a defaming article. Basing on the good working relations between RMC, Rwanda National Police and other institutions including the Ombudsman’s Office, this issue has been brought before RMC to assess and handle. RMC and other concerned institutions are also following up on the issue of another journalist John Williams Ntwari. On the case of Cassien Ntamuhanga, after gathering more information, RMC would like to inform the general public that his problem is not in any way connected to the journalism profession, hence the need to wait for the decision of judicial authorities which are currently handling his case. RMC takes this opportunity to remind the media fraternity that the media self-regulation body does not take responsibility for crimes committed by journalists outside their profession.
