***Press Statement concerning the proposed 2.5MW Solar Project in North Springfield’s Industrial Park*** We applaud the principle of building clean, sustainable energy projects such as the solar project suggested for the North Springfield Industrial Park. As in the case of previous proposed energy projects we look forward to open disclosure by the developer of details of the project. We trust they will welcome queries by the community and the town regarding details of the project. We are concerned yet optimistic that the state regulators will closely examine the project including financials, federal and state credits, deductions, subsidies and rate support particularly the Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). Our concern stems from the recent flap over VT REC sales out of state. We know that GMP is selling the RECs associated with its renewable generators like Kingdom Community Wind and once the RECs are sold, GMP can no longer claim the environmental attributes of the source. Will this project help the State of Vermont reach its renewable energy goals? Some apprehension may occur now that the developers want the town to participate by entering a long term contract to buy power from them. -North Springfield Action Group
