Press release 13th Nov., 2013 ANEEJ WELCOMES NATIONAL ASSEMBLY’S INVESTIGATION OF NNPC OVER ALLEGED DUBIOUS $6.8BN OIL DEAL WITH SWISS FIRMS. Benin City……The House of Representatives on Tuesday 12th November, 2013 ordered an investigation into the alleged connivance between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and some Swiss oil trading companies to rob Nigeria of $6.8bn in crude oil revenue. Three major standing committees of the House, Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Petroleum Resources (Downstream) and Justice have been directed by a resolution to investigate the alleged shady deals. The deals are said to involve the sale of Nigeria’s crude to Swiss private traders “below the market value,” according to a motion moved by Mr. Abiodun Balogun. The alleged deals were uncovered by a report by Swiss Non-Governmental Advocacy Organisation, the Berne Declaration. The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) welcomes this development and commended the House of Representative for mandating her committees to investigate the NNPC as this is coming at a time when Nigeria is losing huge revenue to oil theft and other forms of corruption in the oil and gas sector. According to the Executive Director of the organization, Rev David Ugolor “the House of Representative decision to investigate NNPC clearly indicate that the journey to end the culture of impunity in the oil and gas sector has been given another life after several failed efforts to beam search light on the activities of NNPC.” The House of Representatives Investigation will provide stakeholders the opportunity to reinforce the call for President Goodluck Jonathan to get rid of widespread corruption in the Nigeria National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC) and also strengthening the anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria. We also encourage the members of the National Assembly who are saddled with this task to ensure that all key stakeholders are given opportunity to participate in the investigation through public hearing and also invite the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to provide an insight to the operations of NNPC within the period of investigation.
