Pressed, Not Crushed In 1947, a Bedouin boy threw a rock into some caves in search of his lost goat. He heard the sound of breaking pottery and found clay jars containing ancient scrolls—the Dead Sea Scrolls. This was one of the most valuable biblical archaeological finds ever made. These ancient manuscripts were treasures in earthen vessels. Paul compared his knowledge of Christ to treasure in an earthen vessel. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair (2 Corinthians 4:7–8). Vessels of clay are not considered vessels of great worth or monetary value. They can be easily crushed or broken. What’s inside, however, makes all the difference. The God dwelling within you is more than able to keep you safe from pressures that would easily crush an empty vessel. Prayer for Today: Lord, help me rest in the fact that You constantly guard me.
