Pretty sweet review from last Sunday (and maybe a cheeky gig announcement too): Finally for the evening’s live section (once again we partied on till 4 [F.O.U.R.] in the goddamnmorning after the results) were Red Ocean Nectar. I’d seen some of these guys set last year at Henshaws Frightfest, but didn’t really get to take much of them in as I was stressing about something or other (I’m often stressing about something or other, and if I’m not, I’m stressing about what’s next) so I was really looking forward to actually being able to watch them properly. These guys are so young you kind of expect a band that is not finished, but they prove that expectation to be soooo very wrong with everything they do. Brilliant Rock n’ Roll tunes with genuine grooves and funky hooks are played with aplomb and the lead singer has a confidence that someone twice his age – like me – would be proud of. They remind me of Pips at times, particularly on their second track, in that whilst this is not really the kind of music I would write on my facebook profile as being into, when you are watching it live you HAVE to be into it. The only negative thing I can say about these lads is they play with a youthful energy that frankly I resent; at my age I am starting to feel the fact that I was up well past midnight last night and not even an ocean of Red Bull nectar is going to get me moving round like these whipper snappers - who never stop dancing from start to finish! Red Ocean Nectar are so good and display so much promise for the future, particularly given that they are already the real thing, I’m sure we are going to see more of these guys. Indeed (plug incoming) they are already booked to play bottom of the Bottle when it goes weekly on Saturdays, at our 17th May gig with The Wilde (Hmm, actually Day Old Hate are playing that date too, I don’t know who plans these things…). A great band and I think definitely one to watch out for!
