Principal Performer Spotlight.... NICOLE MIDDLEMISS One of the successful auditionees for Ozgen’s theatre show, ASK(Love) on November 8th, Nicole is 25 years old, recently married and studies bellydance at Brisbane’s Soul Dance school of Middle Eastern , Romani and Tribal Dance, concentrating on Tribal ATS with Rita Markwell. Nicole started dancing at the age of 5 years, training in classical ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary and song and dance. She attended a few dance schools, the last being Steps Dance Centre after starting there in 2000 when just 13 years old. Here I achieved my Junior Teachers qualification in Jazz and Tap and taught several classes at the Centre while running the administration office. Nicole had a wonderful childhood growing up north of Brisbane in Pine Rivers with her brother, and parents who are both long term students at Soul Dance (John, of course, attends drumming classes not dance classes). “My family have always been very encouraging and have supported me in every aspect of my life and I am thankful that I had such an amazing family growing up.” When asked about her dreams for her dancing this is what Nicole had to say, “My dream dance role would have been to perform on Broadway in New York City and to perform around the Caribbean on Cruise Ships. In 2006 I had trouble with my knees and I had arthroscopy surgery on both having a meniscal tear in my left knee and cartilage damage. Since the operations my knees have never fully recovered to the degree required for a professional dancer. This played a large part in the decision not to pursue my career as a professional dancer. Dancing has always been my passion, however my ambition has changed now to dance for myself and inspire my family to take risks and challenge themselves.” Progressively cutting back on her dancing, Nicole was encouraged by her mum Helen (who had been dancing with Margaret at Soul Dance for a few years) to come and try a class with her. Since then she has been learning several dance styles including, Romany, Oriental and Tribal which gives her opportunity to express her passion in a new body-friendly dance form. Soul Dance has facilited a way Nicole can still incorporate dance into her life in a challenging and meaningful way. Dance is in her blood and is the way her soul can fly, “When I dance I release all emotion and get lost in the music. Dancing inspires me to believe in myself and challenges me to be better, not only in dancing but in life. I have always loved performing and the feeling it gives you when you have accomplished something whether it be performing a new routine, learning new choreography or watching other dancers perform and seeing the joy that lights up their faces, I can’t help but smile along with them!” About her successful audition for ASK (Love);- “I decided to audition for the role after I attended one of Rita’s Gypsy Workshops as I realised how much I missed choreography and performing. She inspired me to challenge myself to believe that I can still dance at this level and I love doing so. The opportunity to learn from such a well know artist as Ozgen was something that I could not let pass”
