Principals Message Koutou Katoa. Greetings to the Kavanagh Community This past week has seen two great celebrations with both the 2013 Cultural and Sports awards . It is always a thrill to see how students are achieving to such a high level in a multitude of disciplines in their chosen field. The Blues Awards are a high accolade of achievement and a recognition that should sit with each recipient for many years, if not for life. The key ingredient is often about passion. As human beings we respond to and work hard at the things we enjoy. Joy being the operative word. Therein lies a secret for success. If we are lucky enough to find our passion the chances are we will be good at it and with a bit of luck even earn a living from it! At the Sports Awards guest speaker Brad Thorn took this even further. His testimony of faith was stunning as he related his life as a sportsman who achieved virtually all there was to achieve in rugby league and union. His success both in sports—premierships, world cups and the like (as well as financial success) had eventually left him unfulfilled. Making a connection to our school values he then talked about service to others, becoming a Christian and making the change to being all about me to being fulfilled through supporting and helping others. This was the example Christ set he said. Not only did it bring fulfillment and meaning to his life, it has brought more success and joy as well. I cant remember if I have ever heard someone like Brad (as a top athlete) give such an affirming, authentic and meaningful address. Thank you Brad. For all of us in the auditorium it was a special moment. Lets continue to pray for those who are unwell especially Shania Fox from Year 10 who is in Christchurch hospital undergoing treatment for leukaemia. May the spirit who heals be with her and her family. Lord hear us. Tracy O’Brien
