Priority and Person of Salvation Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for him hath God the Father sealed. (John 6:27) PEOPLE were chasing after Christ because He had fed them bread for the stomach. Christ rebuked them in our verse and told them where the emphasis ought to be. Christ spoke here of the priority in life and the person for life. Priority in life. Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life. The word labor means to put forth a great effort. It is used here to illustrate the fact that we need to put great emphasis on our souls salvation. The exhortation here does not tell us we do not need to work any more for our daily bread. Rather it is a comparative statement which says to put the greatest emphasis in life on our souls needs. Spiritual food is more important than material or physical food. Yet so many in every age focus chiefly upon this life and not the next life. The emphasis in life needs to be chiefly on the hereafter not the here-and-now. Person for life. Everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for him hath God the Father sealed. The source of spiritual food is Jesus Christ. He is the source of eternal life. Two things are said about Him here. They are the grace in Christ and the genuineness of Christ. First, the grace in Christ. Shall give unto you. Everlasting life is a gift. Our verse does not teach salvation by works, the labor is only used figuratively to show the earnestness we need to put into our souls eternal welfare. Salvation comes as a gift of God. For by grace are ye saved it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph. 2:8,9). Second, the genuineness of Christ. Him hath God the Father sealed. The bakers in the time of Christ put a mark (seal) on their bread to insure it was genuine and of high quality. Thus it is with Christ. God has put His seal on Christ to inform us that Christ is genuine, attested, approved. The proof of Christs claims are abundant and excellent (Acts 1:3). John G. Butler
