Private Bible Study: That great man of God, Solomon, explains how idols came to be worshiped. “There was once a father who, overwhelmed with grief at the untimely death of his child, made an image of the child, placed it conveniently in the home so that he could visit it regularly. As time passed, he began to speak to the image, imagining that it could hear, much as it is a practise of some today, to (harmlessly) speak to the grave of their dear mother or father when they visit the cemetery. With the passage of time, others followed and did the same, believing they were honouring the dead. As more time passed, little ceremonies developed around the image, which in time grew stronger and more widespread. Eventually, powerful rulers adopted the idea for vanity sake, to receive the honour of their citizens. Rulers eventually made it law to be honoured in this way whether they were alive or dead. When people lived too far away to do this in the ruler’s presence, but eager to honour their absent king, they would imagine what he looked like and make a likeness of him. Then ambitious artists and craftsmen got into the act, sensing that profit could be made. Thus shelf-size to huge self-standing idols began to be made on a grand scale”.
