Pro-Tempore Ambition Gains Momentum By: Martin Blayon Senator Armah Z. Jallah The Senate Pro-Tempore ambition of Gbapolu County Senator Armah Zolu Jallah has gained momentum from groups of civil rights campaigners who are appealing to members of the Liberian Senate to vote the former presidential candidate of 2005. According to Simeon Gambleh of the Liberians for Democratic Advancement (LIDA), Liberia’s emerging democracy needs to be solidified as the Liberian Senate needs an independent and people centered Senate Pro-Tempore. He noted that the Liberian Senate needs an administrative head or Pro-Tempore who believes in sustaining the country’s democracy after the tenure of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf-led administration. Mr. Gambleh said the pending Pro-Tempore election is crucial for members of the Senate to vote without fear or favor to improve the working environment at the 53rd National Legislature. He also noted that the Senate Committee Chairman on Internal Affairs has worked tirelessly for the citizens of Gbarpolu County and Liberia at large. “Coordination among the three branches of the Liberian government is constitutional, but the Liberian Senate’s decision to confirm presidential appointees should be based on merit and not sympathy,” he added. According to him, the Gbarpolu County Senator understands governance process and is economically equipped, adding that his election as Pro-Tempore will have the ability to bring major changes at the Liberian Senate. He noted that the essence of democracy is to allow the views and interests of the masses to be prioritized. “Senator Jallah has sponsored the passage of 15 bills, namely an Act making it mandatory for every concession to have a minimum of one citizen from its operational site to serve as member on the board; an Act changing the National Bank of Liberia to the Central Bank of Liberia with central monetary policy and control; an Act to establish the Gbarpolu County University College; Liberia Railway Corporation, among others,” he pointed out. He stressed the urgent need for members of the Liberian Senate who are direct representatives of the Liberian people to vote Senator Jallah of Gbarpolu County. Meanwhile, Senators Oscar Cooper of Margibi County and Joseph Nagbe of Sinoe County are also vying for the post of Pro-Tempore in the pending race.
