Probably the most exciting time in my radio career. While sad for many, I was energized by the challenge of keeping Live 105 on the air. it was radio magic, with Steve Masters painting a mystical scene of a radio station wafting over the blacked out bay ( only light visable was from the fires created by the earthquake damage) playing phenomenal music. Big Rick Stewart and Roland West continued the sonic picture for about a week until we were allowed to return to our studios. In reality it was a few music cartridge playing machines, a CD Player, turntable and two mics in an RV parked beside our transmitter on San Bruno Mountain. A heart pounding moment for me was when I was allowed in our condemmed studio building early on the 18th to retreive equipment to take to the transmitter site. As Im under a counter a 5.1 aftershock rolled through and started shaking stuff all around me. What a rush. Ill never forget the scene that night on Market street outside the 13 story building The Furniture Mart where we occupied the first floor. You could barely see the sidewalk and street covered by broken glass, from windows blown out or broken by furniture banging into them and hanging out those broken windows ready to fall at any moment. I have so many great memories of unique majical radio moments provided by the Alex Bennett program with a live studio audience every morning, cutting edge music the rest of the day and great modern mixes at night with Richard Sands behind the scenes selecting music and keeping it all together, and ED Krampf supporting the massive creativity. A ground breaking station creating programming tools that so many stations adopted and use to this day.
