Procedures have been strengthened at the Hervey Bay Pound to ensure the bodies of euthanised animals are not left unbagged in a bin awaiting collection. The new procedures were instituted following an incident in April, Community Health, Education and Training Portfolio Councillor Robert Garland said. “The new procedures have been working well since they were instituted. “Last financial year Council impounded 1,423 dogs and 545 cats. Of those impounded: 873 dogs and 90 cats were returned to their homes; 261 dogs and 119 cats were rehomed and 255 dogs and 335 cats had to be euthanised. “It is very sad that so many animals have to be euthanised,” Cr Garland said. “Council is working closely with the animal rescue groups to rehome many of the animals that are found wandering the streets or surrendered to the pounds. “We’re also working together to promote responsible pet ownership in the hope that people will do the right thing and ensure their pets don’t wander, they are registered, tagged and microchipped so pets and owners can be reunited quickly.” Fact sheets on Responsible Pet Ownership are available from Council’s website frasercoast.qld.gov.au.
