Procter & Gamble (P&G) voluntarily recalled some dry pet food with the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall involves Eukanuba dry dog foods, Iams dry dog foods and Iams dry cat foods. Officials say the products were distributed in the United States, but represent approximately 0.1% of annual production. The products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site, and no other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. P&G says no Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported due to the product, and there is simply a precautionary measure. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
