Prof Ango Abdullahi claims that the North could always win at elections on the basis of what he assumes is North’s demographic superiority over the South. However, that ‘superiority’ has always been doubtful, especially when viewed against other objective criteria, like the enrolment figure in primary schools, density of settlements, etc. (One can drive across or overfly Northern territories for hours without seeing where the heavy settlements of these ‘over-populated’ Northerners). Some observers suspect that Northern leaders have stoutly resisted the use of technology like the satellite mapping in the last national population census exercise, and as well refused having Nigerians state their religion and state of origin, so as to make it difficult for scientific and accurate census figures to be obtained. Somebody should also tell Prof Ango that there are other factors about the votes that win elections. One is the spread, whereby a presidential candidate is expected to garner 25% of votes from two-third of the states (i.e.24 states). Now that some Northern irredentists are making regionalism and religion very important issues, where will a core-Northern candidate get that type of national spread votes? Will they force non-core Northerners and Southerners to vote for this core-Northern candidate?
