Prof N.K Vijayan retires from his commendable service in the department of Collegiate Education, today (30th June 2014). This is the right occasion to pen down a few lines about him. We cherish a relationship right from our KKTM days. During my tenure as Vice Principal and Principal at Maharaja’s College, I have had many opportunities for close association with Vijayan. I wouldn’t shy away from claiming my successful attempts in transforming his potentials into capabilities that has benefited Maharaja’s College, not in a small way. The resourceful people at Maharaja’s college made my Principalship stress-free and enjoyable. Vijayan was predominant among them, acting as the driving force behind many activities concerned with student-discipline in the campus. He was the Discipline Committee Convenor at that time. I do remember how we walked across the campus to drive students into their classrooms. The initial resistance from the part of students slowly melted and our efforts paid off so well that students would begin to march up to their classrooms just as they saw us enter the central circle. I also remember the College Union Election when Vijayan was the Returning Officer. He was very meticulous in conducting the election very smoothly that in turn helped to maintain peace in the campus. Students too cooperated in keeping the Union Office with discipline. Vijayan has an enviable command over English language. I did make use of his drafting style during the NAAC visit and on many other occasions. He has published a number of books and is a habitual writer in newspapers. As a teacher he gained respect and admiration from students. The Address Directory of Maharaja’s College was published, for the first time, with Vijayan’s support. As the then Staff Club President, I remember, with gratitude, the effort he had put to bring out the directory inerrantly and beautifully. I believe that imitation is the best form of appreciation. The later versions of the directory were a copy or cut/paste of the original one. Vijayan is an ardent lover of old Malayalam songs. During music programmes held by the Staff Club we used to approach Vijayan for the details of songs. We(AMC) are very happy that we could include a music programme during the farewell given to Vijayan, Dr. K.G Ramadas and Dr E.M Muhammed, in the presence of Mr.R.K Damodaran. Vijayan is so keen on keeping relationships that he is available on his mobile almost all the time. He is a very active FB user as well. I can’t say my words about Vijayan have come to an end .But writing more is beyond the scope of Facebook.
