Professor Barth Nnaji asserted in an interview on Channels TV (on the sideline of the Lagos Economic Summit), that the siting of most of the new power stations in the country was politically motivated. Is it possible then, that the cancellation of the contract for one of the largest hydroelectric power projects in Africa, and certainly the largest potential investment in power in Nigeria, was similarly motivated by politics? I am referring here to the Mambilla hydroelectric dam project that has been on the table since 1982. The dam, on completion is capable of generating 3000Mw, roughly equivalent of what we are currently generating from all our functioning power stations. What kind of destructive politics would motivate the cancellation of this vitally important project?
