Professor Don Patterson the new Chairman of LMPC? Information - TopicsExpress

Professor Don Patterson the new Chairman of LMPC? Information reaching my office revealed that the Minister of Lands Hon Ralph Regenvanu has appointed USP Professor Don Patterson, a lawyer and academic, to fill the position of Chairman of Land Management & Planning Committee (LMPC) for a period of 5 years. The new land reform laws & amendments to the Land Reform Act gives the Minister the ultimate authority to make such an appointment, however for clarity sake, can the MInister answer the following questions:- 1. Under the land reform amendments, Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs must be consulted before making such an appointment. Has this been done? 2. We were told the appointment is for 5 years. Can you confirm this? 3. This is a statutory post (enacted in parliament), so why is it that the law was designed in such a way that the Public Service Commission was not required to hire (or fire) Chairmans of LMPC. 4. Is the Chairman entitled to a salary or allowance and who pays for this? 5. What if the govt changes and a new minister wants to remove Mr Patterson and replace it with another person of his choice, can this be done and what are the financial or legal implications for such a change? Thank you.
