“Professor in My Living Room” Germany’s First Lecture at Home of High-School College Applicants Bonn / Magdeburg, Germany - 9 September 2013: For many seventeen to eighteen year olds, the last year of their schooling experience has concluded and their goal for 2014 is to gain their college equivalent diploma. They are also looking for a long term career that will continue their growth as individuals and professionals in their chosen fields. One such student is Neele; a graduating young woman from Bonn who was given an orientation boost. She was afforded the opportunity to follow a lecture by a professor from the University of Chemnitz - from the comforts of her family’s living room. The Länderübergreifende Hochschulmarketingkampagne “Mein Campus von Studieren in Fernost” campaign’s new series, “Professor in My Living Room” aims at pointing out the advantages of studying at an eastern German university. B-ROLL and SOTs of Länderübergreifende Hochschulmarketingkampagne “Mein Campus von Studieren in Fernost” PR campaign Beginning and end of lecture with Professor Dr. Pawlowsky Presentation of university student Christian Stellmacher Interviews with all participants According to a study of the German National Association for Student AffairsDeutschen Studentenwerks und des Hochschul-Informations-Systems (HIS), university applicants prefer their home regions. What happens when huge numbers of kids apply to the nearest universities? Last week, Neele was presented with an alternative. Together with her mother Daniela and several close friends, this ambitions eighteen year old was able to listen in to an academic lecture. Professor Dr. Peter Pawlowsky, of the Technischen Universität Chemnitz (Technical University of Chemnitz, gave an introductory lecture in management - in the same manner as he would have done in a lecture hall. The living room lecture was organized by the Länderübergreifende Hochschulmarketingkampagne „Mein Campus von Studieren in Fernost”(Inter-State University Marketing Campaign). It aims at introducing western German pupils to university options in eastern Germany. “I’m among the west Germans who have made an east German university my home,” Peter Pawlowsky said. The Business Administration professor has held a professorship in human resources management, at the Chemnitz university, for 20 years - having refused a position at Berlin’s Free University. “I can only recommend that applicants living between Kiel (northern Germany) and Garmisch-Patenkirchen (southern Germany) to take a look at the eastern German states. There, they will find excellent conditions that can keep up with national and international standards.” SOT Full: Professor Dr Peter Pawlowsky / Technical University Chemnitz (in English) Christian Stellmacher, who also went to Bonn to talk to Neele and her friends about living and studying in Chemnitz, agreed with this precept. The 25 year old Chain Management Masters candidate, who hails from north-west Germany’s Friesland region, has been studying at the Technical University since 2008. “The living room lecture can be taken with a sense of humor… But at least one can get a taste about the individual attention one can receive at an eastern German university,” he said. As far as cost of living goes, Christian is also very happy with his choice of University. “With my student income I am able to afford myself a renovated apartment in a prime location and still have money left over to go out with friends in the evening. SOT Full: Christian Stellmacher / Student, Technical University Chemnitz (in English) During the Q&A which followed the lecture, Neele found out that the 43 east German universities are exceptionally well equipt and also lead in the rankings, according to the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung, a think tank for higher education. Independent experts are also convinced about the quality of research and teaching as well as the wide array of courses offered at these colleges. “To be honest, I had no idea about this and have previously not considered studying in the east… I’ll consider it now, Neele said. This is the point from where this campaign takes off - where authentic, first hand information gets disseminated,” Christoph Matschie, Science Minister of the State of Thuringia said. The good conditions that prevail in the east is being talked about more - “what better way to convince college applicants than through a professor rather than via a general appeal”, the minister concluded. B-ROLL: Information graphic showing total birth rate levels, 1960-2011 The graphic shows a decline in the birthrate among the eastern German states in the years following the fall of the wall - which was particularly high during the mid ‘90s. In turn, the numbers of high school graduates sank considerably - keeping space free for western German high school graduates to fill. The graphic shows the starting point for the campaign initiative “Professor in My Living Room”: The campaign “Study in the Far East”, begun in 2008, is a direct result of these sinking birthrates. The Interstate University Marketing Campaign of the East German States - initially called Hochschulinitiative Neue Bundesländer (University Initiative of the New Federal States) - directs its efforts at making west German college applicants aware about study options at eastern German universities through the initiatives “Studying in the Far East” and “My Study Campus in the Far East”, since 2008. The Hochschulinitiative “Neue Bundesländer” is an initiative of the Science Ministries of the five east German States: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The ministry at Saxony-Anhalt is responsible for coordination of the project. The campaign is subsidized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
