Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, was a Mayor of Istanbul before becoming the president of Turkey. One recent example should be Joko Widodo or Jokowi. He has nowhere to be heard before, but since he has managed to introduce his style of leadership as a Mayor of Surakarta (2005-2012). According to an independent survey poll, Jokowi is now a leading candidate for Indonesian presidency with 40%, leaving behind Prabowo Subianto (Gerindra) in the second place with 21%, Abu Rizal Bakrie (Golkar) and Dahalan Iskan (PDI) at the third and fourth place. There are more examples as put forth by a prominent political scientist, Dr Wong Chin Huat; Lee Myung-Bak was mayor of Seoul (2002-2006) before becoming President of South Korea (2008-2013). Mahmood Ahmadinejad was mayor of Tehran (2003-2005) before becoming President of Iran (2005-2013). George Bush Jr was governor of Texas (1995-2000) before becoming President of US (2001-2009).
