Programmatic Report on Ebola Awareness Campaign Duration: July 3-12, 2014 Implementing Partner (NGO): SHALOM, Inc. Goal: To reduce the risk of contracting Ebola in four communities in New Kru Town Awareness Objective: Objective: To create awareness about Ebola in four communities in New Kru Town by July 15, 2014 To provide information on Ebola to 1000 homes in four communities in New Kru Town by July 15, 2014 To Ensure that 50% of the residents of Popo beach, Central New Kru Town receive proper information about the Ebola virus To sensitized community dwellers on the preventive methods of the Ebola virus, with in the Borough of New Kru Town To provide them with information as to overcome fears and doubts Indicator(s): The availability of photographs, number of households, Males and Females, and attendance signing sheet. This awareness campaign occurred July 3-12, 2014 within the Borough of New Kru Town. Key Output: SHALOM Inc. sponsored a two day workshop facilitated by 4 members from the Health Promotion Sector, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The theme for this whole endeavor was “Sensitizing and not sympathizing.” One hundred of our targeted beneficiaries attended this workshop to enable them serve as tool of information in rising awareness of the virus. This endeavor was a quick response upon hearing the news of Ebola outbreak with in the Borough of New Kru Town. We developed a criteria to select participants who were qualify enough to conduct the awareness. As a result of this standard 65% were selected and divided in to four groups, each group was accompany by a Staff as to target these four communities: Point 4 Popo Beach Central New Kru Town Colonel West The awareness campaign was conducted with in the following strategies: House to House Market Grounds Media Coverage Flyers, Stickers We were also fortunate to have five members from the Community Initiative Service throughout the campaign with in the Borough. Table on awareness statistic with in the Borough Based on the Social Work Profession Ethics we demonstrated the following perspectives: Client self-determination: They were given rights to accept the awareness in their homes or to reject. Though the risk of living in denial regarding the Ebola virus was emphasized, we did not impose information relevant to the virus on them. This was a foundation to build rapport with clients, establishing a connection with them that facilitates comfortable and open communication. This concept was key to the process because it dramatically influence the willingness of participants during the process, and how openly and honestly they cooperated. The Ecological Perspective: We were aware that an individual is constantly creating, restructuring, and adapting to the environment as the environment is affecting them. We demonstrated an environmental approach in providing information relevant to the Ebola virus to clients from a variety of location such as households, Playgrounds, Video Centers, Cooked food Business Centers, Markets and other related areas. Spirituality: We demonstrated spirituality during this endeavor through morning devotion, seeking protection from a Supernatural Power. Comment (s): This endeavor was a worthy cost we could not afford to miss, for it is a lifesaving. We successfully exceeded the set target and contributed to the National Ebola Sensitization Strategy during this endeavor. Thanks to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for collaborating with us in making this activity a success. Constraint(s): Dealing with disbelief among clients who deny reality of the virus Insults and other forms of violence against the awareness team Limited timeframe based on insufficient resources There should be one approved message on the prevention and causes of Ebola Recommendation(s): Peer educators should be involved in awareness campaigns to increase access to various communities. A collective effort including NGO’s, INGO’s, and the Government should be made as to alleviate the spread of the virus with in the Country Continuation of awareness through a variety of strategies such as one-on-one sensitization, campus based, hospitals and media coverage areas with in the Country The Government should rise funds as to assist local NGOs, Hospitals, Schools and other related areas with resources such as detergent soaps, Clorides, and Pump Buckets for distribution with in poor communities with in Liberia Government should enforce awareness by including security personnel in the awareness team
