Progress for our sustainable house build in the bush... The rock placement for the natural swimming pool is going great guns and they now have two layers of rock on the edges. Anna and I are away in Perth so we have to watch from afar with the pics Randall is sending. By the time we get back, the rocks should all be in and the real fun will begin. For everyone who was wondering what a natural swimming pool is, here is a great explanation from Patrick, the landscaper: We call them recreational ponds - natural look complete with a strong ecology that you can swim in. We design it to function as a healthy water ecology filtered by naturally occurring bacteria and water plants. This concept had been around along time in Europe and works great. We help it along with specifically designed pond skimmers and a large wetland filtration system as part of the design. Low power consumption pumps gently circulate the water. These systems are clear to the bottom when they mature and we install LED lighting for evening effect. Beautiful to look at all year and perfect for cooling off in with no chemicals, just clear clean water. Just like a pond there are smaller (and larger) options available. The second photo is one of their previous natural swimming ponds, just to give a bit of an idea of where we are going with it. There are a lot more photos of our pools progress on Waterscapes Australias page :) With a bit of a description about how they do it.
