Progress pic. The planter was stained then painted with antique white to achieve the old, weathered look. The 1x4s were added to help hold soil in. Theyve yet to be stained and painted. I moved all the herbs from the raised beds into the planter. Have some seeds germinating right now and they should be in the planter in a couple weeks. It also has a drip system that will be hooked up to a rain barrel with a solar powered pump. Theres a little over 100 feet of linear planting space. Soil is comprised of peat, mushroom compost, vermiculite, potting soil, and some clay from a lake bed. I plan on building a cover for the winter. For the raised garden a pergola was built. I still have to put the top structure on it - ran out of materials last week. Its built out of 2x2 cedar that was also stained then painted. The bed structure will be painted turquoise. The pergola has been predrilled for 1/4 rope that will be strung throughout to serve as a lattice. The outsides will be reserved for taller plants that require the support with the interior sections for smaller veggies. The beds were originally comprised of 75% lake bed clay and potting soil. That mixture proved too dense and too prone to drying out and contracting. Fortunately the clay compacted so much that I was able to add about a cubic yard of soil. A mixture of 70% peat, mushroom compost, vermiculite, and potting soil was tilled into the existing clay. I keep soaking it with water until I get a good consistency. I thinned out the okra and Brussels sprouts, relocated the strawberries, squash, and lemon cucumber. Its way late in the year to try to grow some of this stuff. Learning many lessons along the way. I keep having to modify the structures so the plants grow in my environment. The location gives 14 hours of Texas August sun a day right now. Its too much for them to handle. Shout out to Casey Woods for his help.
