Progressive Students’ Union today, 29TH March 2014, celebrated the 143rd anniversary of the Paris Commune and the 83rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Comrade Bhagat Singh, with the workers, students and faculties on campus. A community cooking and lunch was co-organised by the students and the workers to celebrate the workers contribution to the running of academic institutions such as the University of Hyderabad, and most importantly to discuss the various issues faced by the struggling contract workers and small businesses on campus. The cooking and meeting was attended by around 50 students, a few faculty members and about 70 contract workers, mainly working in the sanitation department. Different issues faced by the workers were discussed at length, and everyone present, including representatives from ASA, BSF and TVV, pledged support for the ongoing workers struggle in campus. The Progressive Students Union strongly condemns the oppression of the contract workers and small shopkeepers and their employees in campus by the powerful administration, and demands: 1. All contract workers should be made permanent, starting with seniority. 2. Regularisation and revision of wage-rate paid to the different contract workers. We demand timely payment of salary every month. 3. Security and regularisation of the Provident Fund money. 4. All contract workers should be provided with ESI card from the university. 5. Proper safety guards for occupational hazards like safety gloves and soaps to sanitary staff and helmets should be provided to all workers, working outdoors. 6. Women workers should also be entitled to maternity leave, pre and post-delivery. 7. The university should also institute investigation regarding all previous cases of oppression perpetrated by the contractors against the workers. 8. The Health Center should be made accessible to all the workers, and free basic medicine should be provided. 9. Paid leave on the occasion of festivals and national holidays and in the case of physical sickness should be granted. 10. Bonus at the time of festivals should be given by the contractor/University administration. On behalf of Progressive Students Union.
