Progressively debilitated by pain in the left knee prosthesis (the 4th on the left and 2nd on the right) for the past 6 months, my orthopedist does not agree with my assumption that it is infected again. Such was predicted March 2013 when infection with old germs boiled up from deep within just several days after it was implanted. He offered to remove it then. Emotionally I could not bear it and he allowed me to ride that horse until it died then well get you a new horse. It is acting like previous infections but he says it may a remediable mechanical issue. If infected, the whole thing needs to come out and I hop behind a walker on one leg for two months of IV antibiotics before he replaces it again. If mechanical, he removes the femur component then remodels the bone and prosthesis before re-implanting, perhaps losing some more height in that leg, but walking on it very soon. My prayers are to be able to walk without any devices and hike up challenging trails in State and National Parks. My dream is to get on top of Half Dome in Yosemite. If I get two functional knees I am willing to spend two years training for it. Pray for revision instead of replacement. Thank you all for all the encouragement and optimism over the years. I have little belief that it will turn out well based on past disappointments but there is plenty of hope. I hope....a lot.
