Project Labor Agreements: Taxpayers-1 Unions-0 Last time, it was a jail in Santa Barbara (which we won thanks to your help!) Now, its a sanitation project in Pinole. Next...could be your a public works project in your town. Next battle is tomorrow! Details below: When: TOMORROW, October 28th at 5:30pm Where: Pinole City Council Chambers 2131 Pear Street, Pinole, CA With your help, we defeated a potentially devastating Project Labor Agreement (PLA) in Santa Barbara; saving taxpayers millions on the construction of their jail and making 1,000s of jobs available for local residents to compete. Now the unions have set their sights on strong-arming the Pinole City Council on a Sanitation project in the Bay Area. Tomorrow, there will be a debate on the pros and cons of Project Labor Agreements (PLAs), which discriminate against small contractors who choose to be non-union. If this matters to you, you can either participate in person or by sending an email. Either way, you will have a big impact. If you plan to go in person, the meeting is TOMORROW, October 28th, in the City of Pinole to prepare, you can review the meeting agenda here: origin.library.constantcontact/download/get/file/1102159078895-714/Oct+28+Pinole+Meeting+Agenda.pdf & the City Council staff report on PLAs here: origin.library.constantcontact/download/get/file/1102159078895-715/PCC+Report+on+PLAs.pdf Or email your comments to: Mayor Tim Banuelos [email protected] Councilmember Phil Green [email protected] Nicole Goehring from ABC NorCal and a Representative from the Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades Council (CCBTC) will be presenting the pros and cons in a debate format. All you have to do is show up, and speak up about how you think EVERY business ought to be able to compete for Public Works projects, so that the public gets competitive pricing, saving money and making jobs open to all who want to work! Please bring your employees, colleagues, friends, or neighbors and join us to help prevent this PLA. You can also make your voice heard by contacting Mayor Tim Banuelos and Councilmember Phil Green who are researching the topic and let them know where you stand. Your support in this important matter is crucial as the vote is extremely close! Your involvement here will be key in stopping this PLA! Godspeed, Tim Donnelly What is a Project Labor Agreement (PLA)? A PLA gives the union halls exclusive “representation” of all workers, even non-union workers who manage to capture scraps of the work. Imagine that. In a PLA, the unions have the audacity to demand that “Joe the plumber”, who works for the local non-union plumbing contractor, represent him against his boss, even if he doesn’t want to. Even worse, The boss has to divert Joe’s health insurance and pension payments to the union funds. These are benefits Joe will never see.
