Proposal by the Government of India for right to vote to NRIs Overseas Citizenship of India Card holders are confusing them with Non-resident Indians. Non-resident Indians are ones who hold Indian Passport but are living abroad as either permanent residents of some other countries or they are in a work visa status who are being considered by the Government of India for right to vote but not the OCI. OCI have many rights at par with NRIs. OCIs (Overseas Citizenship of India) do not have right to vote because they are foreign nationals now, having already relinquished their Indian Citizenship. As an OCI you have life time visa with multiple entries with multiple purpose, exempted from reporting to the Police authorities for any length of stay in India. Employment allowed in all areas except mountaineering, missionary and research work. I wish if I as an OCI could get admission for PhD in Law on Human Rights even at my age 68 because I preferred to spend my hard earned money for Doctorate degree in the University of repute in India as I am proud of my country of origin. But I think I cannot. Employment allowed in private sector. Professional practice (doctor, dentist, nurse, pharmacist, accountant, advocate etc) is allowed as per provisions contained in relevant Acts. OCI holders are not required to have employment visa and are also not required to register with FRRO seeking employment. OCI is not a dual citizenship and OCI card is not an Indian Passport. To make it more clear, a person registered as an OCI is eligible to apply to the Ministry of Citizenship, Government of India, in terms of provisions contained under section 5(1) (g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, if they are registered for five years as an OCI and have lived at least one year out of the last five years in India, before making an application provided such a person would have to renounce his foreign citizenship.
