Proposed MN anti-bullying law: Hundreds of students rallied at the state capitol today in favor of a bill that would make the state’s anti-bullying bill stronger. The proposed bill (just 37 words) imposes stricter requirements on schools to identify, and help fix, bullying. I have just three questions for our legislators: 1) How do you propose for stricter requirements on the schools? 2) Do you seriously not think schools have plans in place and that teachers do not work to stop bullying? 3) At some point in the proposed 37 word text are parents to be held accountable - both on behalf of the bullies and those who are being bullied? Teachers collective hands are already tied behind their backs. Obviously, bad teachers exist and some schools do a better job than others to protect students, but when will legislators stick to their expertise - whatever that is - and allow teachers to do THEIR jobs. When that happens, our schools just might function much more smoothly.
