Proposed letter to Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to be voted on at Fish and Game Commission meeting on Weds.: Calaveras Fish and Game Commission September 25, 2013 Calaveras County Board of Supervisors 891 Mountain Ranch Rd. San Andreas, CA 95249 Dear Board of Supervisors, The Calaveras Fish and Game Commission would like to urge the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to ask Governor Brown to NOT sign AB 711, the lead ammunition ban. Those on this commission have seen no credible evidence that lead ammunition poses a health threat to animals that have not been shot with lead ammunition. To be ethical in hunting, we want to inflict the least amount of suffering on the game being hunted. Lead accomplishes this as it is heavy and malleable, meaning that the projectile does a good job of maintaining energy and expanding upon impact to cause the necessary damage to mortally wound game. We are not aware of another material that serves this purpose so well. Lead is also inexpensive, allowing hunters to practice and improve their accuracy, which also helps to minimize suffering by the game being hunted. Hunting is an important part of our economy and our heritage. While we do not have exact figures, we know that hunters come and spend a lot of money in Calaveras County. The Pittman-Robertson Act levies an 11% tax on guns and ammunition that goes to the Secretary of the Interior and then is sent to the states for wildlife habitat improvement. To date, over $2 billion has been generated by the Pittman-Robertson Act. Those who are pushing this legislation clearly have no idea of its impact to our economy and to ethical hunting practices and the environment. We feel that this is only a means to reduce and eventually eliminate our hunting traditions and the benefit that hunting provides for wildlife management, and is another infringement on our Constitutional Right that is provided in the 2nd Amendment. The irony if this legislation is that lead is also a material that is rather easily stopped by bullet-proof vests worn by law enforcement. The elimination of lead ammunition essentially shows a preference for ammunition that may be more of a problem for the safety of our law enforcement officers.
