Protect Your Freedom of Speech! The US is increasingly harassing journalists. When we look back at history we see that curtailing the press tends to be an important step on the road to curtailing all freedoms. What happens in the US is usually exported to the rest of the world, so this needs attention from everybody in the world, not just Americans. Some recent events: US journalist Sarah Abdurrahman was detained with her family at the U.S. border in Niagara Falls for six hours without explanation. Government officials have detained journalist and filmmaker Laura Poitras, who has helped expose the NSA spying scandal, more than 40 times at U.S. borders. They’ve interrogated her, seized her laptops and cameras for weeks at a time and denied her access to a lawyer. Photojournalist Duane Kerzic was detained and had his laptop searched merely for taking a photo of Amtrak trains for an Amtrak photo contest. This, and countless other infractions of press freedom, has persuaded actor and press freedom advocate John Cusack to call on Attorney General Eric Holder to “guarantee the ... safe passage of journalists who have exercised their rights under the First Amendment.”
