Protocol Tip of the Day: When entering the dojang doorway stop and bow. That is what we get told but what is real meaning behind this? Stop and leave it outside the door. It is all the baggage from the day, week, or year. Stop and calmly bow with a serious approach to this moment. Its one of those pause and reflect moments. Take time to breathe moment. At that moment its also appropriate to announce yourself, Good Evening Sir!/Good Evening Maam! Again this is the do when entering a room or especially coming into a dwelling for the first time in several hours-polite manners dictate that you acknowledge those in the space. This is when we should approach our loved ones and hug them/smile at/acknowledge them. In the reverse when our Masters or Seniors come through the door. We announce their arrival. We show that we are happy to see them and appreciation them. At home this is done by getting up and hugging them or removing things from their hands to lighten their burden. In the dojang this is done by calling the room to attention and collectively bowing and saying Kumupsunida (Thank you.) Again the humble senior will sometimes avoid or sneak into the area to prevent this collective acknowledgement but truly grateful hu bae should seek to give this acknowledgement of their gratitude. Dont forget to leave in the same manner you approached your training. Take a moment to pause reflect, bow, and say Goodbye Sir! /Goodbye Maam! How would you feel if you loved one suddenly disappeared from the house without letting you know they were stepping out? Disrespected..... Honorable warriors give and expect respect!
