Proverbs 11:4 (NLT), Riches wont help on the day of judgment... Few would dispute that Muhammad Ali was one of the greatest athletes of all time. The three-time world heavyweight-boxing champion has put more men to on their backs than the Serta Mattress Company, and hes appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated more times than any athlete in history. I remember a survey that showed that his was the most recognized face on the planet-more so than even the pope or the president. Today, though, you dont see much of Ali. Parkinsons disease keeps him out of the public eye. Recently a sportswriter went to his home for an interview. Ali escorted him to a barn next to his farmhouse. On the walls were mementos of his prime: photos of him dancing and punching and smiling, holding his championship belts high in the air. A poster from The Thrilla in Manilla. Hundreds of snapshots and awards and trophies. The room was a museum of accomplishment. Ali walked over to the pictures and noticed white streaks on them. He glanced overhead at the pigeons in the rafters. Without a word, he slowly began turning the photos toward the wall, one by one. Then he somberly walked to the door and said something under his breath. The sportswriter asked him to repeat it. I had the world, he said, and it wasnt nothin. Look now. Its strange how we can hear the same sentiment so many times yet never quite grasp its significance. Money wont make you happy. Yeah, yeah. We know already. Youd think wed get the message after years of nagging, yet we still long for fame, fortune and power. We know that money wont appease, yet we continue working long hours and filling our houses with stuff. We know that fame is fleeting, yet we fill our mantels with trophies and glory in our accomplishments. Its not that we dont understand the dilemma. Its part of the human condition. And therein lies the real problem. Were not called to human thoughts but to heavenly ones. Our focus should be on things above, not things below (See Colossians 3:1-4). And until we internalize that truth, we are destined to spend our days in futile pursuits. In what ways have you put your faith in human pursuits? What is God telling you through todays Knights Thought for the Day? Steve Sabol
