As much as we focus on treating our patients’ diseases, we also know that it’s important to address their pain and anguish—an overall approach to patients via our palliative care program. “From a care standpoint, it addresses patients’ needs and reduces health care costs, as those who get their pain under control tend to end up less in the emergency room or other parts of the hospital”, said Jeanie Youngwerth, director of palliative care consult service at UCH . “At a time when reduction of health-care costs is a major concern nationally, that can mean thousands to tens of thousands of dollars less for those people.” UCH is the first hospital in Colorado to receive advanced certification in palliative care from the accrediting Joint Commission.
