Province of Bulacan intensifies emergency action plan CITY OF MALOLOS – In the wake of the devastating earthquake that jolted the Visayan region on Tuesday, experts are set to inspect the structural integrity of Angat dam and two other dams in this province, the Office of Civil Defense in Central Luzon disclosed. Josefina Timoteo, Office of Civil Defense regional director in Central Luzon, said that representatives from the Provincial Government of Bulacan, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Office of Civil Defense-3 and the operators of Angat, Bustos and Ipo dams, Manila Waterworks and Sewerage System, National Power Corporation and National Irrigation Administration, met at the conference room of the Provincial Engineers Office here where they tackled a “worst case scenario” and came up with an “emergency action plans.” “The Office of Civil defense is constantly coordinating with the different concerned agencies in formulating emergency action plans in a case an overwhelming natural disaster—in this case a powerful earthquake that could break Angat dam—occurred,” Timoteo said. It can be recalled that prior to the devastating earthquake that jolted the Visayan region, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado has time and again called the attention of the national government that Angat Dam is a virtual “ticking time bomb” that could explode anytime because it is sitting along the West Valley fault line. “Angat dam is already an old dam ( 44 years old) and needed immediate rehabilitation. Its structural integrity must be fortified to withstand powerful earthquakes.Thankfully, the national government has already earmarked billions of fund for the repair and rehabilitation of the dam,”said Alvarado. The governor said that concerned agencies will hold regular meetings to strengthen the emergency action plans which will also be brought down to the different barangays. “Prayers always work but it is also prudent to be ready and prepared,” he said.
