Psalm 103:3—[He] forgives all your sins. Read todays devotion, Five Big Words, from Beside Quiet Waters, a devotion book that reminds today’s Christians that when life’s storms threaten to overcome us, the Lord promises to lead us to find peace. Name some words that really make a difference. How about “I love you.” Or how about “I missed you.” When lovers or family members talk this way, their simple words speak volumes. What about the words David puts before me? Can I ever find bigger words than “[He] forgives all your sins”? “All your sins,” David said. I know something about sin, more than I care to admit. I know, though I tend to forget, about my habitual sins. Each day I fall into the same ruts—the indecent thoughts, the unkind words, the spiteful actions that are almost second nature to me. Some days it can happen that some “special” sin rocks me like some earthquake and leaves me behind in the rubble. Such sins I have no trouble remembering. They rattle around in the closet of my conscience like some skeleton causing me dread. “Sin”? Yes, indeed, of this I’m well aware. “[He] forgives,” David also wrote. I desperately need forgiveness for all my sins. I need the assurance that they are canceled out completely in God’s account books. That when I one day stand before his judgment seat, the entry behind my name will be blank. David reminds me how this can be. The Lord, my Savior-God, has done it. He can’t just erase my sins as if they didn’t matter. He can’t just sweep them under the carpet like some indulgent grandpa. He had to pay for my sins. And he did, with his Son’s precious blood. Are there any bigger words in the whole world than those five: “[He] forgives all your sins”? Prayer: Lord, each day let me thrill to these blessed words: “I have forgiven all your sins.” Amen.
