Psalm 119:17-24 Gimel –His Name Shall Be Called Wonderful Counselor 17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your Word (Davar). “We see from verses 17 and 23 that the psalmist is calling himself a servant of the Lord and there are others who have been called the servant of the Lord in the Scriptures. Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel, James Paul and Timothy are all called servants of the Lord. As born-again believers we too can be servants of the Lord for in God’s Word He gives us directions to do the things that He has called us to do making us His servants.” 2twokens.blogspot/2012/09/gimel-we-need-gods-word-psalm-11917-24.html 18 Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law (torah). “In verse eighteen we see one of the most quoted verses in all of God’s Word for in this verse we see the psalmist asking the Lord to open His eyes in order to understand the wonderful things that are in His Word. God’s Word is spiritual and in order for His children to understand what is in His Word our spiritual eyes must be opened. Let’s look at two other verses from the Bible that speak of this: ‘ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (Eph. 1:17-18).’ As believers we must keep our eyes open when we read God’s Word and not have our eyes opened to the evil things that are around us ‘Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever, (1John 2:15-17).’” 2twokens.blogspot/2012/09/gimel-we-need-gods-word-psalm-11917-24.html 19 I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments (mitzvoth) from me. “Once we become believers in Jesus Christ we become strangers upon this earth because this world is no longer our home. Peter writes these words to his readers, ‘Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, (1Peter 1:1a). Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul, (1Peter 2:11).’ Because we are strangers or aliens on this earth we need the direction of our Lord and He will give us direction from His Word as we read, study, meditate and practice it in our walk with Him. Dr. Wiersbe writes ‘the laws for driving in Great Britain are different from the laws in the United States and it is dangerous to confuse the two. God’s people are being led on the narrow road that leads to life, while the people of the world are on the broad road that leads to judgment (Matt. 7:13-14).—If we take time to meditate on the Word and seek the Lord, He will show us the path of Life (16:11).’” 2twokens.blogspot/2012/09/gimel-we-need-gods-word-psalm-11917-24.html “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 20 My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments (mishpatim) at all times. 21 You rebuke the proud—the cursed, who stray from Your commandments (mitzvoth). “Let the histories of Cain, Pharaoh, Haman, Nebuchadnezzar, and Herod display the proud under the rebuke and curse of God. He abhors their persons and their offerings, he knows them from afar, he resists them, and he scatters them in the imaginations of their hearts. They are especially hateful in his sight when cloaking themselves under a spiritual garb. They say, ‘Keep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ But God says, ‘These are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that burns all the day’ (Isa. 65:5).” (Charles Bridges). They are under the curse of the Law, destined to eternal death. rediscoveringthebible/Ps119-21.html 22 Remove from me reproach and contempt, for I have kept Your testimonies (edot), 23 Princes also sit and speak against me, but Your servant meditates on Your statutes(chukkot). 24 Your testimonies (edot) also are my delight and my counselors. “What do you do when people criticize you? What goes through your mind when you are in the presence of people who are unkind, especially people who dont believe the Word of God? The psalmist gives one answer: ‘Princes also sit and speak against me, but Your servant meditates on Your statutes. Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors’ (vv. 23,24). Meditate on the Word of God. Get your mind fixed upon what God says. If we ponder and think about the things other people say, we will be agitated and anxious and uptight. But if we meditate on what God says, those things that are true and right and holy and beautiful, His peace will fill us. Delight in the Word of God. ‘Your testimonies also are my delight’ (v. 24). Some people delight in gossip. They enjoy listening to rumors about people. But the psalmist says, ‘While they were gossiping and telling lies, I was meditating on the Word of God, because I delight in it.’ Obey the Word of God. ‘Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors’ (v. 24). The Hebrew text means, ‘the men of my counsel.’ Authorities, friends and even enemies may want to give you counsel. But get your counsel from the Word of God. * * * Whatever your difficulty today, turn to the Bible and let it counsel you. Let it saturate your mind, heart and will.” (Warren Weirsbe) backtothebible.org/index.php/component/option,com_devotion/qid,14/task,show/resource_no,296/Itemid,75/
