:: Public Announcement :: After much thought, I’ve made the decision to ‘leave’ Facebook, without actually leaving or deactivating my account. There are a number of reasons that informed this decision which I’ll go into, as well as why I’m still keeping my account and how I’ll be using it. Facebook has been a great tool for keeping in contact and connecting with friends from literally all around the world. It’s a great way of feeling connected via small insights through mediums such as status posts, photos, videos, and sharing content from around the web. Over time, Facebook has evolved to become an interesting news feed of content from beyond the realm of just Facebook user contribution itself. This has probably become one of my favourite things about Facebook - I can informally keep up-to-date with creative & design related content, events, music releases, interesting products & businesses, and delightful & inspiring posts (not those ‘inspirational quotes’ that utilise horrendous typefaces). So you’re no doubt wondering, with many positives, why I have decided to ‘leave’? Quite simply, the entanglement of the good stuff with negative, mundane, bullshit posts, and highly personal ‘airing of dirty laundry’ and ‘venting is so demotivating and time-consuming, I have to wade through all of that stuff, just to find the interesting content. I may even be guilty of doing some of those things myself, but that needs to change and I’d very much like to escape from it. I dont even care that Facebook has been known to manipulate post visibility and news feeds to influence user moods or hide content. For the foreseeable future, Facebook will act as a kind of holding page for my place on the social network and I’ll be using Facebook strictly as a messaging platform, keeping access to a few important & useful groups, checking events, updating personal credentials for professional / work related purposes, and maintaining pages. I’ve undertaken a preliminary cull of contacts to narrow down who I actually engage with and who takes the time to engage with me. I’ll then be checking in every so often just to keep an eye on friend requests and maintain pages as necessary. This is far from a goodbye. If you’d really like to stay in contact, you’ll be able to find me at the details below, which hopefully leads to the simplest of things like a random SMS, phone call, or having a drink in the pub and doing actual ‘real life’ things instead of living life through a graphical user interface.
