Public Assets: small-scale arts organisations and the production - TopicsExpress

Public Assets: small-scale arts organisations and the production of value Friday 6 February 2015 at Central St Martins, London Building on previous work on value and sustainability in the UK’s small scale arts sector, Common Practice invites you to a one-day conference to discuss the ways in which small-scale arts organisations produce artistic value beyond measurability and quantification, provide spaces for public experience extra to the market, and in so doing contribute importantly to cultural wealth. In this way, small-scale arts organisations provide ample evidence of the necessity to build rather than diminish state funding for the arts as a core public asset. Speakers will include AK Burns (TBC), Jesús Carrillo, Kodwo Eshun, Charlotte Higgins, and Maria Lind. The event has been organised in collaboration with Andrea Phillips. We will address the ways in which it is possible to assert a different understanding of wealth within the current funding landscape of the arts, and will seek to develop a vocabulary separate to the one of instrumentalisation with which to argue for this ethos. We would like our UK peer organisations as well as international colleagues to join us to contribute to the discussion. In January we will write to peer organisations to invite specific contributions to break-out sessions – please email us if there is a particular topic you would like to raise: [email protected] Priority booking for peer organisations until 5 January (Booking link will follow shortly). Cost: £10, coffee and lunch available. Bursaries for travel and accommodation are available (up to £200). Funds are limited, please send a short statement to: [email protected] with subject line Common Practice Conference Bursary to apply. Preference will be given to distance and budget limitations of the organisation. Deadline 12 January
