Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson would not name names, but he confirmed that some local executives in Metro Manila asked for a postponement of the squatter relocation program after the May 2013 elections. According to Presidential Communications Development Secretary Ramon Carandang, there are about 100,000 squatter families in Metro Manila, of which 60,130 are living along waterways. Quezon City has the most number of informal settler families at 10,367, followed by Pasig City at 7,449, Navotas City at 6,017 and Caloocan City at 6,012. Of the 60,130, at least 19,440 families live in eight major waterways that are most critical for the flood masterplan. Singson said 1,484 informal settler families lived around Pasig River; 4,217 around San Juan River; 3,683 around Tullahan; 2,997 around Manggahan Floodway; 1,687 around Maricaban Creek; 3,887 around Tripa de Gallina; 1,415 around Estero de Maypajo; and around 170 around Estero de Sunog Apog You don’t have to be a genius to figure out who are this officials based on where the waterways are located.
