Public education is already bad in Mississippi, so why would - TopicsExpress

Public education is already bad in Mississippi, so why would anyone not want to stop Common Core that will only make it worse. Do the Legislators understand its teaching methods? It overcomplicates the simplest way to teach and may also attempt to teach things which are not historically or otherwise true. Math for instance. Instead of teaching students to pay attention to the position of the digits like ones, tens, hundreds, etc. it attempts an end run around these concepts. So to get the answer to 35 - 17, it adds an undetermined number of ones digits to 17. Like 17 + 3 = 20, 20 + 5 = 25, 25 + 10 = 35, then adds up 3 + 5 + 10 = 18. Overcomplicated, students will get confused as to what to add to 17! A simpler way would be 35 - 17 = 18 determined by stacking the 35 over the -17 and completing it in the traditional way. Then using addition to check your answer. 18 + 17 = 35. Much simpler and you have to understand the concept of how position determines whether the digit is a one, a ten, a hundred, etc., which I think is very important in understanding math. I hope Melanie and her allies are successful in passing a No funding for this attempt to dumb down our children in Mississippi.
