Published September 23, 2014 Big Island Video News NEWS BRIEF Video from a Monday evening overflight illustrates the stalled lava flow front to the southwest of Pahoa village, and also shows breakouts upslope. INSIGHTS “Vulcanographer” Mick Kalber recorded about a half dozen breakouts in the lower 5 miles of the active flow. He said a great deal more lava is visible on the upper half of the active flow, from the Pu`u `O`o vent down to the beginning of the forest boundary. It can be seen entering the forest and in the skylights. USGS scientists spoke about these breakouts in yesterday’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory update, saying, “none of these breakouts by itself has been very vigorous, but together they compose a significant portion of the total flow volume. Some of these breakouts are also producing smoke plumes as they creep into the adjacent forest.” A civil defense message issued this morning confirms that the flow front is still not moving.
