Puerto Ricans are a people and culture of African, Taino Indian, and Spanish influences The religion from Spain and Africa blended creating a Catholicism that may include some of the African Yurba tribal beliefs, now known as Santeria. (In Haiti, the island to the west, it is called Voodoo). The style of music and dancing seen in this video dates back hundreds of years. The ladies dance about like birds turning and prancing in the grass and they call out to the gods for protection or whatever. Jump to 8:05 and you see a man dressed up in the Puerto Rican flag with a scary mask. These masks were worn to scare away evil spirits from the festivities. Anyway, this video displays the African roots that make up the current and unique matrix of the Puerto Rican culture.
