Pumpkins Progress Report- October 8th 2014. A Perfect Day A perfect day to slip away To slip away from reach To walk alone On rock and stone Upon the windy beach The moon shimmers like silver The sun glitters like gold And the starlight on the river Is a treasure to behold Red, yellow and gold, the leaves Falling from the autumn trees Rustic hues And ice-cold blues Upon the Norfolk seas A perfect day to slip away To slip away somewhere Where boats float by Beneath the sky In the cool, crisp autumn air In the cool, crisp autumn air Wells-next-the-Sea is located on the North Norfolk Coast. The name Wells comes from the many spring wells that were around the town. The town started to be known as Wells-next-the-sea in the early 19th century, to distinguish it from other places of the same name. The North Sea is a mile or so from the town, as a result of the silting of the harbour. A mile long sea-wall was constructed in 1859, and this is the walking route from the town to the beach. The town has long thrived as a seaport and is now a beautiful seaside resort, with a narrow gauge railway, that runs adjacent to the sea-wall, from the town to the beach. The beach is backed by dense pine-woods, which are fun to explore. Wells is famous for its sand-dunes and many colourful beach-huts. Its a lovely place to visit. We had an Irish coffee in a quaint pub, with an open fire, on the town green, before venturing down the narrow shopping street, to the harbour and the beach. The sea breeze blew the cobwebs away. The fish and chips were delicious. On the drive back we saw a purple sunset across the flat Fenland fields, that stretched for impossible distances. The trees were silhouettes in the fading light, and we saw orange pumpkins glowing in the fields, on the outskirts of King Lynn. There was a full moon. Most of the field pumpkins have been harvested now. The pumpkins are picked by hand, and there are many pick your own pumpkin farms in Norfolk. Well, Ill be picking some more of my own pumpkins this week, so tune in again tomorrow for another Pumpkins Progress Report (the most waywardly eclectic gardening feature on Facebook). Have a wonderful Wednesday.
