Statement by State House Spokesman @MEsipisu to clarify the planned Presidential visit to the Nyanza region (1) President Uhuru Kenyatta remains wholly committed to visiting Nyanza, the better to liaise with leaders and the people of the region. (2) Unfortunately, the President has been unable to reschedule pressing prior commitments in time. He will not be able to travel to Nyanza this week, as had earlier been anticipated. (3) There are two particularly vital engagements which are incompatible with an extended visit to Nyanza this week. (4) The first is the East African business summit, at which the President will be a key contributor. This year, the summit will be held in Kigali, 15-17 October 2014. The summit is East Africas most prestigious gathering of leading figures from government and business. President Kenyatta is a keynote speaker at the conference. In his capacity as the chair of the East African community, and given his leadership of East Africas largest economy, His Excellency is a central player in the summits deliberations. He will, therefore, be attending the summit. (5) The second pressing commitment is the commissioning of the Ol-Karia IV geothermal power plant. The preparatory work necessary to bring the power plant online has been completed. President Kenyatta will visit the site this Friday 17th October 2014 to commission the installation. The new power plants at Ol-Karia are central to the Jubilee Governments strategy for lowering the cost of power and infrastructure. That strategy commits Government to bringing up to 5,000MW of power online. In doing so, we expect to significantly lower the cost of power. Once again, attendance at this function precludes an extended visit to Nyanza. (6) The President’s commitment to visiting Nyanza to discuss the region’s development remains steadfast. He is, therefore, consulting closely with elected leaders and other stakeholders from the region, so that a mutually acceptable schedule for an extended visit can be agreed. Once agreed, the dates will be made public. Manoah Esipisu Secretary of Communications and Spokesperson, State House 14th October, 2014
