Puro negative comments sa article na to! Haha honestly I kept laughing when I read the article... Im not at all affected and was in fact surprised that a lot was really affected. Lol. For me the writer was just pointing out that some filipinos are trying hard to be sosyal just to show they belong to the upper class even though they are not. Also, I agree with Dan Occampos explanations. There is nothing wrong if you want to buy something expensive... but the reason of buying it like just to show you are rich and you try to be at the same level of your rich peers while in reality you are average or poor is considered as social climber. But to buy because you want good quality stuff without paying too much like the ukay ukay thing and without bragging it to everyone that youre wearing signature clothes then its ok... showing off just to have the impression from other people that you are rich then that is a Form of being a social climber. In my case... I can spend minimum hundred thousand pesos for traveling simply because its my passion but at the same time my phone is not at all latest model and i dont even give a damn coz expensive phone is not at all my priority. When i was a student.. i buy ukay ukay too! :) its cheaper than the brand new at the mall. Prices of ukay ukay 15yrs ago was below 50 pesos for one top while brand new is 99 pesos at 99 store hehe And branded or not, who cares anyway? Youre not going to walk with the brand label of your shirt exposed right?.. besides, if you are really rich... even u wear simple clothes, still you are rich. But those who are pretending to be rich, even you wear signature clothes, very expensive jewelries and brag your expensive phones but you end up riding jeepney as u dont have ur own wheels and u borrow money in times of emergency then that is being a social climber. - somehow living beyond your means just to be able to go with the level of the elite. Regarding taking a photo of your coffee at starbucks, again there could be too many reasons behind that. The writer of this article was pertaining to those who literally went to starbucks for the sake of taking photo only and let everyone know INDIRECTLY that ei, im sosyal kasi i drink coffee at starbucks and for an added info, starbucks is too famous in the Philippines while Seattles best is more famous in US. In fact, you are not at all considered sosyal if u go to starbucks.. it is the same as other coffee shops out there anyway.. naging sosyal lang coz prices of their drinks is higher compared to other brands. And for filipino lower to middle class standards, its quite expensive na since you can actually buy decent meal with the price of one frappe. But for other countries, there is no such thing as sosyal when u drink starbucks coffee. Expensive and sosyal i guess in foreign countries is going to 5 star hotel just to have a sip of this caffeine. In Philippine standard, barya lang for the rich ang starbucks even they buy everyday. For some of them, It becomes normal or part of their lifestyle. And they dont bother taking photo because its something they do almost on a daily basis. For the average people.. drinking once in a while as a treat wont hurt their pockets... others just wanted to try something new... but for some, going there is considered as experience because a cup of starbucks coffee is considered expensive for them... but to social climbers, they go there literally to show off and trying hard makisama sa mga elitista even they have other important financial matters to attend to... And for others, they are really into coffee and starbucks is their best choice over other brand.. about naman sa bisdak, the writer was focusing with the social climber (who was with his/her sosyal colleagues) and suddenly talk to his/her bisdak friend via phone in full english while in reality he/she speaks to his/her friend on their own dialect pag sila lang magkasama. Another is number 9, when you have to go to ayala JUST to eat jollibee- the writer meant probably meron namang jollibee malapit sa area mu but you still went all the way to ayala para mas feel mu na sosyal ka since u thought elite people are MOSTLY in ayala area. And dining there makes you feel you are one of them. The point is, some filipinos are trying hard to be sosyal even their status is below the standard of those real sosyal. If you analyze the article as a whole, then you wont be reacting that negatively. Ika nga eh, sometimes you have to read between the lines. And dont focus with some negative words only then leaving behind the meaning of the entire sentence and u start to missed the point. Probably the writer shouldve explained it in a different manner and start first by defining the differences between social climber from Vanity, then wants from nèeds, and financially Literate from financially ILLITERATE. :) peace to you all pips!
