Putin is President/Dictator For Life and can afford not only to ignore the wishes of Russian citizens but also to wait. He can protect Russian-speakers in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in due time. Theres no rush. TE states the West should not go to war with Russia over Ukraine. This is taken to mean: no use of military force. Yet the calculation is mistaken. Regardless of how much Putin has lost touch with reality because of his long years in power, hes not going to risk a fight with the West. Position and logistics are temporarily with him, but even his special forces are ill-equipped, ill-trained, and of dubious fighting ability. Oh, theyre good against civilians, but against real soldiers? Like African armies, theyd melt away in the face of real threat. Merely putting 2 Para or some of the 101st Airborne in Ukraine would result in Putin pulling back. The resulting loss of face for him would then lead to his overthrow. Instead the West says dont do that, but were not going to do anything to stop you. Were like a giant confronted by a dwarf who says Oh dear, the dwarf is angry, I mustnt do anything to upset him further. Its pathetic.
