Q: Are the eyes the best way to detect diabetes? A: The eyes are the window to the soul, and the only place we can see blood flowing without cutting you. A dilated fundus exam (comprehensive with the drops in your eyes) is one of the best ways to look for diabetic changes. Also, in June we purchased a brand new technology that can detect diabetes up to 7 years prior to other methods and symptoms. The equipment works by shining a specific wavelength into the eye and then looks at how much of another wavelength is reflected back. This is a measure of what are called advanced glycosolated end products or AGEs for short (how often your blood sugar has spikes). We know that when you have diabetes or are pre-diabetic, your blood sugar goes high more than “normal”. Now, we can detect this YEARS before other methods. It costs $20, takes about 10 minutes total time, and is very accurate.
