Q: Does anyone have any words of wisdom or tips on how to deal with insomnia after having a baby? I gave birth to my son approx 3 months ago, and had the usual sleepless nights with the baby waking several times a night needing a feed. I was also very anxious about caring for this baby (my first) and was diagnosed with post natal depression. With time, support, practise, and antidepressant medication, I am now feeling much better and more confident in my role as a Mum. My baby is doing well and is now sleeping up to 8 hours at night without waking. However, I still have insomnia. I am usually very tired at night and tend to fall asleep easily, but then I wake up with a start about 30-60 mins later, full of anxiety and worrisome thoughts. And then I cant get back to sleep. And then I worry about not being able to sleep, and the anxiety worsens to a point where sleep becomes impossible. I believe that those weeks of needing to wake up frequently during the night in order to attend to a crying hungry baby has gotten my body out of good sleep habits. And now that my baby is sleeping through the night, I find that I am not. These sleepless nights are slowly causing my mood to deteriorate once again, so I desperately want to get on top of this insomnia before that happens. Can anyone relate to this? Has anyone got any advice or hints on how I can get myself back to sleeping well at night again? Thanks in advance for your help.
