Q: How can we help our children be confident with their healthier food choices when around their peers? A: Encourage your family members to make healthier choices during the day through positive responses when they are making a healthy choice outside of the home. Take a minute to praise your child when they are making healthier food choices. Catch them tasting a new veggie, or making a request for heirloom tomatoes in their lunch box. Provide your children the space to express at home the challenges they may be experiencing when making healthier food choices at school. Reinforce to your children the benefits of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables, and that it is wonderful he or she enjoys produce in season. Your actions speak volumes in the kitchen and dinning room, make sure your plate is full of fruits and veggies every meal. Have your child develop a safe response to their peers, i.e. I love this stuff. You should try it. Share with your family the value of making healthier choices around food and physical activity, and express how important your familys health is to you.
