QUESTION: Is transportation the new vehicle to keep students from attending a school of excellence? Toledo Public Schools does not transport students out of their neighborhoods. Therefore the students who may be able to get an out of district to a better school will not have the resources to secure transportation, thereby creating a barrier to a quality education. Then when you get to higher education, such as Lourdes University public transportation is not a priority for inner city students. TARTA buses do not run a schedule conducive to class offerings. For instance if you have a 9 Oclock class, there is no public transportation to get you to your class on time. If Lourdes University truly has a mission of community that is called to grow, to be hospitable and inclusive, to be peacemakers and justice seekers the ministry would collaborate with TARTA and Call A Ride and remove barriers that involve transportation. If Toledo Public Schools was truly #Proud they would remove barriers that involve transporting students away from academically poor schools and provide transportation to successful schools.
